There was no crowd lining the road as Alan Boothroyd ran towards the finish line. No bikini clad lovelies handed him bouquets as he climbed onto a victory rostrum after 20 successive days running from Lands End to John O’Groats. And that’s exactly how he likes it.
With an understated shrug and a quip that he could now enjoy a pint of beer for the first time since Christmas Eve it was all over.
This morning Alan tweeted, “What a 20 days. It’s been hard. I’ve met many nice people. I’ve lots of tears. Thank you for making my dream come true.”
He had achieved what even those closest to him thought impossible. He’d kept his body together, run the equivalent of two marathons a day for the last three weeks.
By running from Lands End to John O’Groats he had conquered the elements, serious risk of injury and has inspired a growing gaggle of supporters who have taken him to their hearts.
What an achievement
To run 40 marathons in 20 successive days for Huddersfield Town’s Keep It Up charity which supports the Yorkshire Air Ambulance is quite simply phenomenal
A quiet man who doesn’t enjoy fuss he is going to have to get used to a bit.
What he’s done has been hailed for desire, passion, perseverance, guts, stamina, sacrifice, mental toughness, drive and been described as quite simply unbelieavable.
The respect and admiration for the 52-year-old has clogged up many a Twitter feed.
