Where Can I Buy Cheap Chocolate?

Hello to all the chocolate lovers out there. Have you ever asked yourself where can I buy cheap chocolate? Or how can people sell chocolate so cheap? Or does best before date make a difference to the quality of chocolate? We at Approved Food have the answers to these questions.

Approved Food has a great selection of cheap branded chocolates that will save you many pennies. They look great, smell great and taste great, what more do you want?! Below we have created a comparison of our price and retail prices for well-known brands. But before we take a look at the brands let’s talk about out of date chocolate. One key aspect we want to focus on is “sugar bloom”.

Sugar Blooming

Sugar blooming is where the surface of the chocolate changes colour and goes all pale. The perception is that it is due to age. However, it is actually due to moisture and light. The moisture is absorbed by the sugar, the sugar then dissolves and when the water evaporates, it forms large crystals. If you want to know more about this topic check out an earlier blog post we wrote:

It is therefore important to keep chocolate in an airtight container away from moisture and light. All the products at Approved Food are placed in a very cold dry warehouse and have not seen the light of day. Perfect environment.

How does chocolate become cheap?

Right now let’s discuss how does chocolate become cheap?

  1. End of a competition – for example, a promotional feature may end before the product goes out of date, therefore, the retailer does not want to stock or sell this product.
  2. Seasonally out of date – for example, a retailer does not want to sell Christmas or Easter chocolates after Christmas or Easter. They also do not want chocolate that is branded with a summer theme when it is winter or products that have a major sports event like the world cup after the world cup has finished.
  3. The best use of packaging – to make 1 million chocolate bars for an order a certain type a manufacturer will buy more packaging then required in case they make a mistake. This ensures they can still fulfil the order. The best thing to do with the packaging is to put a product inside it and sell the overproduction cheap.
  4. Overproduction – manufactures often get forecasts wrong, the item gets short-dated and ends up coming to business like Approved Food.
  5. Change in the brand colours – a retailer may want to change the colour or style of a brand and therefore needs to sell off the old brand fast.
  6. New Recipes – if a retailer changes the recipe or improves a recipe the old recipe will be sold off cheap to get rid of the old stock.
  7. Big Retailers normally want 75% of the life of a product to be left on the product when it sits on their shelves. If the product is below that value it will be sold off for cheap.
  8. RRP Prices – a manufacturer puts a promotional price on an item, however, retailers do not want to sell at those low prices.
  9. Lost Stock – sometimes warehouses make mistakes and they lose the stock in the system. When they find it short dated they sell it on cheap.
  10. Made for another market – the product maybe made for another country or may have both English and another language on the packaging.
  11. Bankrupt stock – when a retailer goes bankrupt or into liquidation they will sell off their stock cheap.
  12. Unattractive stock – it could be misshaped or under or overweight and the retailers do not want to sell it. However, it still tastes great.
  13. Cancelled orders – these items may not be sold anymore by the retailer so they sell them off cheap.

Now let’s take a look inside…

Do you think the best before date makes a difference to the quality and taste of the chocolate? Let’s take a look:

We did a poll on Facebook to our customers and a total of 76% said no and 24% said yes.

Keynote to bear in mind, best before date is about food quality and food past the best before date is safe to consume. However, use by date is about food safety where food should not be consumed after this date. The use by date is popular on meat and dairy products.
