Product: Blackcurrant Leaves Latin Name: Ribes nigrum Plant Family: Grossulariaceae Other Names: European Black Currant, Quinsy Berries, Squinancy Berries, Cassis, Schwarze Johannisbeerblaetter, Gichtbeerblaetter, Cassistee & Feuilles de Cassis. Description: A native of central Europe, this deciduous shrub grows to a height and width of 1.5 by 1.5 metres. The leaves are aromatic having the scent of the blackcurrant in them and are alternate, simple, 3–5 cm long, palmate with five lobes and have a serrated edge. The flowers are 4–6 mm in diameter, with five green-white petals edged with reddish brown. The fruits are black and can be up to 1cm in diameter hanging in bunches. Brief History: As a cultivated crop, blackcurrants have been grown for over 500 years, they became a valuable source of Vitamin C to the British people during World War II when most imported fruits rich in vitamin were hard to come by. The British government encouraged the growing of blackcurrants as a means of getting vital Vitamin C during wartime.
